    • 6 Sep 1855, Port Philip, Australia (father's Will)

From Jan Ralton - Henry sailed alone from England and arrived in Australia at Port Phillip Bay aboard the "Isabella" in November 1852. (The gold rush in 1851 had increased migration to the colony.) The trip would have taken about 3 months. He paid his own fare and could read and write. His occupation was listed as a clerk however all later references say painter, paperhanger or gas fitter (all considered to be one trade at the time).

      Hi Maurice,

I have found the probate grant England & Wales National Probate Calendar (Index of Wills and Administrations), 1858-1966 for Henry Hemingway in 1874. I am sure you will not remember but Henry's wife received 40 pounds a year and the only source I could imagine would have been through Henry's family in London. I am having trouble copying it so:-

"Hemingway Henry, Effect under 600 pounds 28 February. Administration of the effects of Henry Hemingway late of Collingwood Stockade near Melbourne in Victoria Painter who died 23 Jan 1871 at Carlton near Melbourne was granted at the Principal Registry under the usual Limitations to Samuel Frederick Langham the Younger of 10 Bartlett's-buildings Holborn in the City of London Gentleman the lawful Attorney of Mary Hemingway Widow of the Relict now residing at Madelaine-street Carlton."

A little more grist for the mill.

      regards
      Jan
